“Spread in wrong and deceitful advertising amidst Corona virus epidemic”
Our College Citizen Consumer Club organized a one day webinar event entitled “Spread in wrong and deceitful advertising amidst Corona virus epidemic” on 06th January 2021. In this regard, Dr L Sofia, Post Graduate Assistant in Commerce, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Thiyagadurugam, Kallakurichi District, Tamil Nadu was the invited speaker. COVID 19 has completely changed our lives.
Owing to COVID 19, for the past 10 months, consumers have been affected directly and indirectly by false advertisement. Wrong advertisements of Television, Newspaper, Internet and Social Websites are very dangerous for consumers, she elaborately addressed. Beside that she correctly pointed out that the various consumer acts such as Consumer Protection Act 2019, The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act 1954, Food Safety and Standards Regulations (FSSAI) 2018, the Celebrity and the Consumer Protection Act (Sec 21) and so on. The Department of Legal Metrology is responsible for maintaining uniformity and accuracy in all weights and measures, weighing and measuring Instruments used by traders in all markets and trading centers. The main benefits and functions of the Department is to carry out the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, the Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011 , Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2012, etc., This acts as an instrument to protect the consumer from unscrupulous, they pointed out. They also explained the various rules of standard weights and measures, verification and stamping of weight or measure, power of directors, controllers and legal metrology officers, penalties and offences. Beside that they explained various ways of consumer exploitations like dishonest labeling, dishonest packing, dishonest ratings, dishonest products, dishonest pricing, dishonest promotion & price offs and dishonest online.

Social Media is a weapon that is capable of construction in addition to destruction. It plays an important role in everyday life. Facebook, you tube, whatsapp, twitter, linkedin, facebook messenger, instagram, TikTok, QQ and Douyin are doing the main role for social media. Facebook, YouTube and Whatsapp are the world’s largest social media networks, he said. Beside that he explained various shortcomings of social media networks.
“Cyber Security and Consumer Protection”
The Citizen Consumer Club of Trinity College for Women (Arts and Science), Namakkal conducted a webinar event in the title of “Cyber Security and Consumer Protection” on 20th July 2021. This event was held through the platform of Google Meet.Mrs. R. Navamani, Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Computer Science & BCA of Trinity College for Women, Namakkal was the resource person. Today’s world is digital and computerized due to the development of the internet. The growing use of the internet gives a developing and enlarging prospect for E-marketers. The Internet is changing the way customers buy goods and services and has rapidly evolved into a global phenomenon. At the same time increasing usage of the internet, online shopping has become popular amongst people of different types of groups. Customers choose and select online shopping as it is more convenient and faster than offline shopping. Online shopping is becoming well-accepted to purchase a wide range of products and services, she said. For the past one decade, online purchasing systems have been gradually developed among the customers. However, they suffer a lot due to some problems with online purchasing. Quality issues, delivery and logistics, digital payment failures, additional charges, unclear return and guarantee policies, lack and shortage of security, receiving wrong products, damaging products in transit and delay in delivery of products are the problems of online purchasing systems, she denoted.
