          The Department of Costume Design and Fashion, in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council of Trinity College for Women, Namakkal organized a one-day workshop entitled “Modern Techniques in Handloom Saree Manufacturing – With reference to Chinnalapatti, Dindigul District” on 07th July 2023.  

          Mr. P. Thulasiraman, Handloom Saree Weaver, Gandhiji Weavers Cooperative Society, Manufacturer of Handloom Saree, Chinnalapatti, Dindigul District is the invited speaker.     India is the world’s second biggest producer of textiles and garments.   In India, West Bengal state is famous for the production of handloom sarees. Kancheepuram, Arni, Cuddalore, Pochampalli-Krishnagiri, Vanavasi-Salem, Jalakandapuram-Salem, Elampillai – Salem, Erode, Avinashi – Tiruppur, Karaikudi –Sivagangai, Chinnalapatti – Dindigul, Thirubhuvanam – Kumbakonam and Tirunelveli are famous for handloom saree manufacturing in Tamil Nadu state.  However, for the past few years, these handloom industries have been affected in the market.   There is no high expectation from the customer for the handloom sarees, he said.  

          Besides that, he explained the handloom saree products process like design making, selection of materials, reeling, dyeing, weaving, iterations and finishing.   Mr. R. Thiyagarajan, Staff of Gandhiji Weavers Cooperative Society, Chinnalapatti highlighted the varieties of handloom sarees produced in Chinnalapatti.   Mrs. K. Punitha, HOD of CDF, the faculty of CDF Ms. K.P. Theepika, Mrs. A.P. Pavithra, Mrs. R. Shanmugapriya and the students of Costume Design and Fashion took part in that workshop.
