Observation of National Handloom Day: August 7, 2023
The National Handloom Day was observed at the Trinity College for Women, Namakkal, on August 7, 2023, under the department of Costume Design and Fashion.
Mrs. Aruna Selvaraj, Executive Director, Trinity College for Women, Namakkal, presided over the National Handloom Day celebration. In her address, she said, In the development of the technology-driven textile sector, handloom still takes up a special place, and the efforts of the weavers have never gone out of fashion. Also, she urged the students to encourage and uplift the handloom weavers in their work in order that they do not quit the profession, and all the students and staff members of our College to wear the handloom saree at least once a month.
Apart from that, this department of CDF conducted an event under the heading “Skill enhancement in handloom printing using natural resources.” Both the faculty and students of CDF highlighted the use of natural raw materials for handloom manufacturing.
The handloom sector plays a very important role in our country’s development. This sector contributes nearly 20 percent of the total cloth produced in the country. On this subject, to encourage the utilisation of raw materials like flowers and leaves in handloom manufacturing, we organised this programme. Mrs. K.P. Dr. M.R. Lakshiminarayanan, Principal, the faculty of CDF, Ms. K.P. Theepika, Mrs. A.P. Pavithra, and Mrs. R. Shanmugapriya, the faculty of Nutrition and Dietetics Mrs. R. Rupa, Ms. P. Sri Renugadevi, Mrs. V.Sowmiya and many students of various departments took part. All the department faculties and the students of Costume Design and Fashion wore handloom saris and chudithars on that day.
